Should we take the ‘continuing’ out of ‘CET?’

The current CET cycle began at the start of last year. As we all know it runs for three years, during which I need to acquire a minimum of 36 CET points. For me a good spread of CET has come quite easily. After recently attending the College’s annual Conference, ‘Optometry Tomorrow’, I have now acquired enough CET for the current cycle.

So, I have my full quota. I am now 36 points up. I can put my feet up – well and truly.

And for how long may this complacent period last for? Until the next cycle begins? In fact no! Having all of my points now, means that I do not need to acquire a single CET point until December 2012, that is at the back end of the next cycle.

All of this doesn’t really seem quite right to me. As it stands, this current system is hardly encouraging me to keep my core skills up to date.

So given this, I wonder how many of us will slip into complacency when they reach their 36 points and then not do one iota of education until the end of 2012?

‘Continuing’ Education and Training? I think not.

I agree Hugh and would hope that the system may eventually change into a rolling cycle - but the jury may still take some time over deciding that one.

Did you take the recommended line and complete a spread of CET over the competency topics or have you acquired CET in just the subjects that you are more comfortable with?

View from outside of the sector:

Surely a better process would be to make sure that everyone had to do CET across core areas (i.e. what you were examined on) therefore making sure that everyone was at the same level? You could then do extra on areas which interested you once you had completed the relevant core “CET” required…

David, That would be ideal, yes, and I guess that many may be already doing this but perhaps a minority?

Surely it would make sense to make this compulsory? That way everyone is at the same level of education about a broad range of subjects - seems like a good idea to me…
