A welcome opportunity: College launches new routes to Fellowship

The College has this week announced the new route to achieving Fellowship.  The previous approach to attaining Fellowship was based entirely upon academic achievement in the College’s Higher Qualifications.

The new route to College Fellowship was launched at the recent Diploma Ceremony by College President, Kevin Lewis.  Potential applicants are now invited to apply for the coveted FCOptom by submitting a portfolio of evidence covering a wide range of practice demonstrating how their accomplishments have benefited the practice of optometry as a whole, whether that be at a local, national or at an international level.

This move by the College is a welcomed opportunity and one which will surely have a greater uptake by current Members, especially those who have worked hard to achieve personal accomplishments or who have been involved in the advancement of our profession but who are not interested in taking further exams in more specialised niche areas of optometry that are set out in the Higher Qualifications.  Whilst this original route to Fellowship will still remain, the following alternative areas are also considered:

  • Clinical practice
  • The provision of visual or wider healthcare
  • Optometric research
  • Optometric education
  • The management of visual healthcare
  • Higher qualifications in vision science
