The other important upcoming election (outside of Iowa): College Council 2008

As we all struggle to get back into work it is usually at this time of the year that we try to make some new resolutions. Every advertisement on the TV is telling us to lose weight, eat healthily, go to the gym or stop smoking. One of my new year’s resolutions is to stop complaining, before I become a very, very grumpy old woman.

So many amongst us moan about our profession – the fees, the politics, the CET etc., but what really makes me angry is that they are not willing to do anything to change it. “What do I get for my professional fees? When has the College done anything for me?

Well, having been elected to the College Council last year, I now feel that I am in a better position to answer that – and the answer is, rather a lot. I have been constantly overwhelmed at how hard the College work. I have a greater appreciation where our fees go, the high working standards and efficiency of the staff that work within those four walls and the amazing number of projects and committees that they are involved with. I have been humbled by my experience but I also feel that I have contributed and made a difference in my own way.

If you are thinking about standing for election, I would encourage you to become involved. And if you are unable to give the time, then I would encourage you to talk to the Councillors in your region and bring up those gripes that you have. You will be listened to. You councillor is there to represent your views after all.

But what I will say is this: there is no excuse for a rant unless you fully understand what it is you are ranting about. So stop moaning on those forums and networking sites – get involved and make a difference.

The call for nominations for College Council in 10 out of the 12 regions for the 2008-2011 term closes at 5pm on Monday 7 January.

If you are thinking of standing yourself or of encouraging a colleague to do so, you can find more information, including all the forms required etc here.
