Recruitment, Retention and Turnover survey

One of the Recruitment blogs which I regularly read, which is here, had a interesting post about Recruitment, Retention and Turnover which was taken from the CIPD annual report - the full survey will be available from the CIPD from the 22nd of June however it made for some interesting reading. Some points which I feel are worth mentioning to our avid readers:

  • Key reasons for recruitment difficulties are lack of necessary specialist skills (65%), followed by higher pay expectations (46%) and insufficient experience (37%).
  • 73% of organisations still engage recruitment agency services to help fill job vacancies
  • 59% fail to evaluate agency performance
  • The following initiatives were found to help organisations to overcome recruitment difficulties: offering flexible working (74% say it has a positive impact but only 30% currently use)

These points reflect the state of the whole of the employment market but I feel they are pertinent to the health sector in particular. Flexible working is something which we are constantly being asked about but which is still relatively rare - time for a rethink?

Flexible working - yes please. As a parent of school age children I would jump at the opportunity to have a flexible package.

But in reality, how many employees in the optical sector are actually offering flexibility? Are the multiples on board for example? And do you think this would be simple for them to achieve or is the change fraught with difficulties?
I guess working the weekends is still an issue with most who come to you looking for employment?

Flexible working is something, which is becoming more available dependent on the location and type of the role available. We are seeing more contracts available for Term Time working and part time and this applies to all sectors of the Optometry sector because some employers are recognising the fact that they have to be more flexible for the reason you mentioned and also a variety of others.

With longer opening hours becoming more commonplace within the retail sector, I feel that flexible working options will become more prevalent – what are the practice owners view points on this?
