The job market - Ask the recruiter

As usual at this time of year, we get alot of soon to be newly qualified Optometry students calling us wanting to know what is around and what they can expect in terms of job roles, salaries and future prospects so this year I thought (in the theme of Janes “ask the examiner” see below) I would open the floodgates and make myself available for these kinds of questions.

So please feel free to post questions in relation to the job market, interview techniques, salary & benefits and I will do my best to answer them.

Best Regards,

David.

Not quite sure if you are the right person to ask here, but here goes. When I qualify, I intend to do some locum work - are you the right person to talk to about this? Also, I need to pay off my student loans quickly as I want to go on to do a PhD but, as a newly qualified is locum work something you would recommend as my best option?

Good Morning DB, Thank you for your question. As a company we have a locum division who help locums find work across the UK and as such would be able to help you find work if this is something, which you wanted to pursue. The direction, which you take going forward, is an important decision and which you need to thin carefully about. In our experience, the first couple of years after you qualify are extremely important and because of this we would recommend that you find a position which has a comprehensive support program so that you can continue to develop your skills going forward - I hope this helps however if you need further guidance please feel free to contact me using the details on the contact us page. David.

    hi david,
are the job prospects for newly qualified optometrists good in the uk? also after the pre reg year what sort of starting salary can be expected? also just heard that optometrists can now train to be independent prescribers will this mean bsc courses will now be extented?

    Good Afternoon Lena,

    Thank you for your question.

The job prospects are excellent for newly qualified Optometrists in the UK with a wide variety of options available to you and the starting salary is largely standard but will have some regional variations depending on where you work. In relation to the extension of BSc courses - my understanding of this is that it will be a seperate course which is done after qualification.

If you require any further information, please dont hesitate to contact me.

    David.

    hi,
thanks for getting back to me you mention the salary is standard.how much could you expect to earn on average a year?

  • David // Sep 6, 2007 at 8:28 am

    Hi Lena,

The salary you get depends on a wide range of variables however you can expect to get somewhere between £28-£32k as a package. This would not include bonus. benefits and CET which you can expect as part of the package.

    I hope this helps.

    David.
