Inductions - One of the most important recruitment processes.

Having worked within the recruitment sector for over eight years now with six of them in the health sector, I am constantly surprised by the lack of importance placed by employers on inducting new members of their team into their company, culture and ethos.

Within the Optometry sector there is an ever-increasing battle for talent specifically within certain skill sets and geographical areas, when you have found someone for these areas, for them not to be inducted properly almost defeats the point of recruiting them.

A perfect example of this was when we were recruiting for a client within a hard to fill area of the UK. Their wish list was highly specific which considerably narrowed the field, however, we found a highly qualified candidate who, after a number of interviews, agreed to join the company.

Three weeks later I received a phone call from the client stipulating that the candidate had left, upon further investigation it became apparent that the client had gone on holiday the week the new member of their team had joined and then berated the person on their return for not doing the job properly or at least as they interpreted it! Was it any wonder they left?

Whilst I appreciate this is an extreme example, it highlights the fact that a thorough and comprehensive induction is a vital part of making sure thatyour team are happy and productive.

I am soon to start a new job within a small group of independent practices.
I am not aware of any formal induction process. Would it be a good idea to ask for one and if so, what should I really be expecting?
    Great site by the way.

Hi Claire, Thanks for the comment. In terms of an induction, it depends upon the role which you will be doing but I would be looking for a structured process which gives you an overview of the practice, company and role.

The key point is to make sure that you get enough information in order to perform to your best. Without this, it can be quite unsettling having to constantly ask for guidance in a strange environment.

I hope this helps and please feel free to contact me for further information.

    David.
