How is as important as what…
I was recently doing some training in a sales based environment and I was talking to the audience about verbal communication and this time it was specifically to do with talking on the telephone
The focus of the training module was to focus on the point that “how you say something is as important as what you say” Now this is not an uncommon topic within the sales arena however it does have a wider applications.
This process is widely talked about in a variety of publications/websites/blogs one of which is http://www.nlpweekly.com/ and you can read more about this subject here. Now, the reason I mention it on here (under the banner of Training & Development, of course!) is that it started me wondering - In a profession where you can be delivering life changing information on a daily basis, how much focus is paid to this simple process which can make an enormous difference to how the information is percieved? And, would a training program on this subject be of interest to the world of Optometry?
Answers on a postcard…

Communication skills does play a very important role within the consulting room. However, in my experience as a pre-reg supervisor and and as a practitioner of many years (both as a DO and as an Optometrist), I am regularly surprised at the lack of such skills our new graduates seem to have. I think this is a topic which should start at undergraduate level and continue throughout or professional lives. Communication Skills is a Core Subject within the GOC competencies. But I rarely see any CET provided on such a level.
